The labourer will be required to perform tasks involving physical labour at construction projects and will be required to operate a variety of hand and power tools.  Responsibilities will include the cleaning and preparation of work sites, setting braces to support the sides of excavations, erecting scaffolding, cleaning up rubble and debris and removal of waste materials.  He/she must be capable of operating a variety of equipment such as hand tools, saws and drills and may include: jackhammers, pavement breakers, concrete mixers, earth compactors, boring machines, mechanical hoists, laser beams and surveying and measuring equipment.  Other general duties as assigned.


Key Responsibilities


Organization

  • Load, unload and identify building materials, machinery and tools and distribute them to the appropriate locations according to project plans and specifications
  • Prioritize assigned tasks in the most efficient manner without compromising safety

 

Communication

  • Verbalize progress and request assistance where necessary to ensure the safest, most productive completion of tasks possible
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials

 

Following direction

  • Provide assistance to craft workers such as carpenters, civil team, quality assurance etc.
  • Help erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps and other temporary structures

 

General Construction Skills

  • Utilize pumps, compressors and generators to provide power for tools, machinery and equipment or to heat
  • Lubricate, clean, maintain and repair machinery, equipment and tools
  • Control traffic passing near, in and around work zones
  • Help erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps and other temporary structures

 

Miscellaneous Labouring Duties

  • Clean and perform preparation of worksite to eliminate possible hazards
  • Shovel cement and other materials into portable cement mixers, help to mix, pour and spread concrete
  • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, compact and level earth to grade specifications using appropriate tools
  • Grind, scrape, sand or polish surfaces using abrasive tools or machines
  • Measure, mark and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Previous experience as a construction labourer preferred
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR preferred (OFA1 or OFA2 in B.C.)
  • Must possess a valid Driver's Licence
  • Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods and the tools required in various construction processes and needed to do a job
  • Strong working mechanical knowledge of machines and tools including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labour under adverse field conditions
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule
