Traine Construction & Development is based in Kelowna, BC and works throughout Canada, primarily on multi-family residential construction projects for our property management division, Mainline Living to operate. We have a need for two (2) Carpenters to work on a two (2) weeks in and one (1) week off shift at a number of our active Construction Projects. We currently have projects in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia and the successful Carpenter must be available and willing to travel across Canada to work on our projects.


Journeyman Carpenter is responsible for building, restoring and/or installing of structural woodwork and related materials. In addition, the Journeyman Carpenter is a teacher and a leader for all carpenter apprentices and as such is responsible to mentor, guide and instruct on how to accomplish tasks using industry best practices.


Carpenter and Carpenter Apprentice's primary responsibility is to learn as wide a range of construction skills as possible by integrating into the teams and assisting wherever possible, according to skill and ability.  They will be required to perform tasks involving basic Carpentry and construction knowledge as well as physical labour at construction projects. They will be required to operate a variety of hand and power tools.  Responsibilities will include the cleaning and preparation of worksites, setting braces to support the sides of excavations, erecting scaffolding, cleaning up rubble and debris and removal of waste materials

 


Key Responsibilities


Mentoring and Instructing (Journeyman Carpenter)

  • Guide and teach apprentices ensuring they are preforming task correctly


Quality Control

  • Completed work is thoroughly checked by Red Seal where appropriate to ensure work complies with applicable codes, bylaws, regulations and acts, with an emphasis on safety and environmental issues


Carpentry (3rd & 4th Year Apprentices)

  • Construction of the building framing, walls, as well as finishing, such as the windows, cabinets, and interior trim
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements using hand tools, machines, or power saws
  • Construct chutes, forms and align form panels for pouring concrete
  • Lay building foundations
  • Interpret and demonstrate ability to use specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required
  • Confirm trueness of structures, square, plumb and level
  • Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment
  • Set up scaffolding according to relevant safety requirements


Construction Assistance (1st and 2nd Year Apprentices)

  • Measure, mark and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed
  • Clean and perform preparation of worksite
  • Shovel cement and other materials into portable cement mixers
  • Spray materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint or stucco through hoses to clean, coat or seal surfaces
  • Utilize pumps, compressors and generators to provide power for tools, machinery and equipment
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards
  • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps and other temporary structures
  • Grind, scrape, sand or polish surfaces using abrasive tools or machines
  • Provide assistance to craft workers such as carpenters, plasterers and masons


Communication

  • Contribute to discussions and offer opinions as appropriate throughout the course of construction
  • Advise all necessary individuals of daily progress and stage of work, problems or quality deficits
  • Use of iPad, cell phone, radio and plan grid
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment and materials
  • Follow instructions of Lead Hands and Foreman
  • Advise all necessary individuals of daily progress and stage of work, problems or quality deficits
  • Respect and respond to direction given


Safety

  • Ensure that PPE is worn at all times and encourage team and sub trades to comply with PPE and safety policy requirements.
  • Complete all hazard assessments and first aid reports as required by company policy
  • Actively participate in Daily, Weekly and Monthly safety meetings
  • Operate, read and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices when working in confined spaces and/or hazardous environments

If you have:


Qualifications and Experience

  • Enrollment in the provincial apprentice program or hold a Red Seal Journeyman ticket
  • Previous experience as a construction labourer would be an asset
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR preferred
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner if certified
  • Must possess a valid Driver's Licence
  • Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods and the tools required in various construction processes
  • Strong working mechanical knowledge of machines and tools including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
  • Use of radio
